Google Ads not converting: where to look first
Short answer
Google Ads not converting usually has one of four causes, in this order: broken conversion tracking, an ad that doesn't match its page, a weak landing page, or the wrong audience. Check tracking first. Until it counts every enquiry, you can't tell whether the clicks are poor or real leads aren't being recorded. Each cause has a different fix.
Clicks and spend, but no enquiries
The Google Ads report shows clicks and a daily spend. Your inbox and phone show nothing. That gap is the problem behind the search "google ads clicks but no conversions".
A conversion (a visitor doing what you want, such as sending a form or calling) only exists in your report if something records it. So ask first whether the account counts conversions at all. Open the conversions section of your Google Ads account and see whether a conversion action exists and whether it has recorded anything recently. Then send a test enquiry yourself and watch whether it appears.
Four causes, in the order we check them
1. Conversion tracking is missing or wrong
The form works, but the account never hears about it. Or it counts something that isn't a lead, such as a page view, and the numbers look healthy while the inbox stays empty. Either way, you are judging the ads on bad data.
2. The ad and the page say different things
An ad that promises one specific service and lands on a general home page makes the visitor search the site for what the ad promised. The words in the ad should be the first words the visitor sees on the page.
3. The landing page is weak
A landing page (the page a visitor reaches after clicking the ad) can lose people for plain reasons: the offer is unclear, the form sits far down the page, or nothing says what happens after you send it.
4. The audience or keywords are wrong
Broad keywords bring people who wanted something else, such as a job, a free tool, or a do-it-yourself guide. They click, so you pay, and they have no reason to enquire. The search terms report in Google Ads lists the actual phrases people typed.
What to fix first
Fix tracking before anything else, then separate the other two problems with two checks.
- Tracking: send a test enquiry. If it doesn't appear as a conversion, tracking is broken and every other number is unreliable.
- Traffic quality (who is clicking): read the search terms report. If many phrases have nothing to do with what you sell, the problem is the audience and keywords.
- Page quality: if tracking works and the search terms are right, but visitors leave without acting, the problem is the page or the mismatch between ad and page.
A site audit helps when you can't tell which of the three you have, because it reads your site and your ads together. If you would rather hand the account to someone, see our google ads management services. For the wider question of getting visitors to a site, read guide: how to promote my website.
Follow-up questions
Why do I get Google Ads clicks but no conversions?
Either the visitors don't want what the page offers, or they do and the account doesn't record it. Test tracking first, then read the search terms, then look at the page.
Why is my Google Ads conversion not tracking?
Common reasons are a tag (the snippet of code that reports a conversion) that was never installed, one placed on a page visitors never reach, or a form that sends without opening a confirmation page. A site rebuild can also remove a tag that used to work.
Is Google Ads not working, or is my site the problem?
Check the site and the account together. If tracking works and the search terms are right, the page is the likelier cause. If the search terms are off, the ads are bringing the wrong people, whatever the page looks like.
How long should I wait before judging the ads?
Count clicks, not days. Wait until enough people have clicked that you would expect several enquiries at your usual rate, then judge. If you don't know your usual rate yet, tracking is the thing to set up first.
